Rack PDUs

February 22, 2013 Written by JohnTech

Johnston Technologies offers four different categories of rack Power Distribution Units (rPDUs). Each product offers a variety of advantages for individual IT environments. These advantages allow our customers to choose which solution fits their need the best.

Each rPDU category can generally be relayed over for each brand. Some brands, however, offer different technologies. For example, Geist offers scalable monitoring features that are hot-swappable. For more information about Geist Upgradeable power strips, read our blog.

Basic

Basic PDU transparent Basic rPDUs are cost-effective solutions for power distribution within a rack. There are a variety of options for input and output plugs including single-phase and three-phase inputs. These rPDUs can support up to 17kW worth of power capacity and can be mounted vertically or horizontally within a rack.

Metered

Metered PDU Cropped transparentMetered rPDUs allow remote power monitoring of current and voltage at the rack level. Metered rPDUs are ideal for energy optimization and preventing circuit overloads.

Sizes

Johnston Technologies offer Metered rPDUs that can be mounted both vertically and horizontally with a cord length up to 15 feet. Their load capacity can range from 1.4kW per rPDU to 22kW with up to a 60 amp breaker. Multiple input and output plugs are available in both single-phase and three-phase units.

Switched

Switched PDU Cropped transparentSwitched rPDUs allow users to monitor connected loads and remotely turn on or off individual outlets. Switched rPDUs integrate well for power cycling, preventing circuit overloads and restricting unauthorized use in IT environments.

Sizes

Johnston Technologies offers Switched rPDUs that can be mounted both vertically and horizontally with a cord length up to 12 feet. Their load capacity can range from 1.4kW per rPDU to 17.3kW with up to a 50 amp breaker. Multiple input and output plugs are available in both single-phase and three-phase units.

Advanced Metered

Advanced Metered PDU Cropped transparentAdvanced Metered rPDUs allow users to monitor power consumption from multiple rPDUs at the outlet level. These rPDUs are ideal for high-density and blade server racks. Monitoring by outlet lets the user truly get a glimpse at how much power each server in a rack is drawing. These rPDUs enable users to improve capacity planning and energy efficiency planning by providing them accurate readings of how much power each server is using.

Sizes

Johnston Technologies offer Advanced Metered rPDUs that can be mounted both vertically and horizontally. Their load capacity can range from 3.3kW per rPDU to 17.3kW with up to a 30 amp breaker. Multiple input and output plugs are available in both single-phase and three-phase units.

Monitoring

Monitoring Switched, Metered and Advanced Metered rPDUs can be achieved through Secure Web, SNMP and Telnet Interfaces. User customizable alarms can provide a warning for circuit overloads in real-time by monitoring both voltage and current. Current is also visible on a digital display located on the face of the rPDU. These rPDUs incorporate well into most data center Facility Monitoring Systems and can include temperature and humidity monitoring. This information allows for users to right size their IT environment easily to lower Total Cost of Ownership.
